Wetherby Races

Wetherby Racecourse, located directly next to the A1(M), is the leading jump racing course in Yorkshire.

The left-handed track has some undulations but, with its steady bends, it suits the long-striding galloper.

Wetherby’s main race days are during the autumn and winter. November sees it host the Charlie Hall Chase, while the highlight of its ever-popular Wetherby races Boxing Day card is the Rowland Meyrick Chase.

In recent years Wetherby has also staged flat racing on dates during the summer.

Wetherby Races Tips

The Skelton combination of trainer Dan Skelton and his jockey brother Harry Skelton have a stellar record in recent seasons at Wetherby races and their runners should always be respected.
Local trainer Philip Kirby also has a highly respectable strike rate, while Nigel Twiston-Davies often makes the long journey from the Cotswolds worthwhile for his backers.
Prolific jockey Richard Johnson is another man worth following when he makes the trek to Wetherby Racecourse.
The trends for flat racing here are still new enough to be treated with some caution, but Yorkshire trainer Richard Fahey has reaped the rewards of patronising the track, while jockeys Daniel Tudhope and Ben Curtis are developing fine records here.

Wetherby Racecourse is a left-handed track that swaps itself between hurdles and chase, moving in to out and back again. It’s flat and simple, there’s no sharp pulls and the home bend is a long sweeping one. The top bend is a little sharper and very slightly downhill but that’s about as complicated as this track gets. You can race quite quietly and still make it happen here.
