Plumpton Races

Plumpton Racecourse is the classic small, scenic, rural British jumping track. Set at the foot of the South Downs in Sussex, Plumpton races is a wonderful place to sample the delights of the sport.

The left-handed track is only a mile round but the long uphill finish from the home bend makes it a stiff test, especially in winter.

The Sussex National, run each January, is always a competitive event and represents a serious test of a horse’s stamina. Many top trainers send their budding stars to Plumpton races to gain racecourse experience.

Plumpton Races Tips

Local trainer Gary Moore is always well represented at Plumpton races and any market moves for one of his runners should be respected. From further afield, Anthony Honeyball and Alan King have healthy strike rates at the course.
Gary Moore’s sons Jamie and Joshua Moore are often in the winner’s enclosure but Harry Cobden, a less frequent visitor to the track, also has an excellent record at Plumpton racecourse.
Look for horses with proven course form and runners who like to lay up with the pace around the track’s tight turns.

Plumpton Racecourse is a front runners track through and through. It’s got two tight bends, at the top and bottom of the track, with a back straight that's very steep and then levels out. There's quite a liberal hill on the top bend then it swings round again. You don’t find many that come from too far back to win because of the sharp bends. I had quite a bit of success there with Brandon Castle when he was a novice because he was quite keen and went off at a gallop and gave us the space for a breather. We were gone before people knew we were!
