Listowel Races

Listowel Racecourse is a left-handed, oval-shaped Irish horse racing venue in County Kerry.

Famous for its week-long Harvest Festival in September where the big race is the Kerry National Handicap Chase over about three miles, this track is only used during the summer and autumn for both flat and jumps events.

A circuit of this level course is about a mile, meaning Listowel races take place on one of Ireland’s tighter tracks.

The run-in to the winning post is about a quarter of a mile, so it helps if horses have a bit of speed for running on the flat or between obstacles.

Listowel Races Tips

The top jumps jockey at Listowel Racecourse over the five seasons from 2015-16 to 2019-20 was Paul Townend after he steered 19 horses to success at a 28 per cent strike rate. As stable jockey to Willie Mullins, it comes as no surprise that he was the leading National Hunt trainer in that time, saddling 30 winners at a ratio of 27 per cent.
With the flat Listowel races, jockeys to follow include Kevin Manning, Shane Foley and Gary Carroll. They were the top active riders over the five-year period between 2015 and 2019, with eight or nine winners apiece at strike rates of 14 per cent, 12 per cent and 18 per cent respectively.
Dermot Weld trained the most Listowel winners on the flat in that time with 10, but father and son Aidan O’Brien and Joseph O’Brien had better averages (23 per cent and 20 per cent), alongside Willie Mullins (30 per cent).
