Limerick Races

Limerick Racecourse is a right-handed, oval-shaped Irish horse racing venue at Greenmount Park in County Limerick. Home to both flat and National Hunt events over jumps, it opened in 2001, replacing Greenpark Racecourse which shut two years earlier. It is the newest track in Ireland to have a Grade 1 event over jumps at it, the Faugheen Novice Chase run on Boxing Day.

The most famous Limerick races take place over jumps during its four-day Christmas Festival, directly competing with Leopardstown’s equivalent. Another big Limerick race day takes place in March when mares have graded events over hurdles and fences.

A circuit of this undulating track is about a mile and three furlongs. Despite a steep climb in the back straight and sharp descent to the final bend, Limerick horse racing events favour front-running types.

Limerick Races Tips

  • For a Limerick race day over jumps, the best winning combination has been leading Irish National Hunt trainer Willie Mullins and his stable jockey Paul Townend. As with many racecourses, they are the leading handler and rider. Mullins saddled 41 horses to victory at a 32 per cent strike rate in the five seasons between 2015-16 and 2019-20, while Townend rode 28 winners with a 31 per cent success ratio.
  • Shane Foley, meanwhile, is the top active flat jockey at Limerick Racecourse. It paid to follow his mounts in the five years from 2015 to 2019 as he rode 15 winners with 17 per cent success in the saddle.
  • Aidan O’Brien has been the best trainer in flat Limerick races in the same period with 17 winners at a 28 per cent strike rate.
