Kelso Races

Kelso Racecourse is a left-handed, oval-shaped British horse racing venue in the Scottish Borders.

Used for National Hunt events only, the hurdles track is sharper than the steeplechase course because it’s on the inside with undulations on both.

A full lap is about a mile-and-a-furlong and a mile-and-a-quarter, respectively.

Major Kelso races include the Morebattle Hurdle and Premier Kelso Hurdle, both over two-and-a-quarter miles, the Premier Chase over almost three miles and Borders National, a handicap chase over a marathon four miles.

There are Kelso race fixtures from September through until May, so it’s only the summer months when the track isn’t used.

Kelso Races Tips

Brian Hughes was the leading jockey at Kelso Racecourse during the five National Hunt seasons from 2015-16 to 2019-20. He rode 45 winners in that time at an 18 per cent strike rate.
Other jockeys to look out for in Kelso races include Craig Nichol and Sean Quinlan.
It certainly pays to follow Scottish trainers and yards from the north of England at Kelso Racecourse rather than southern stables. Lucinda Russell saddled the most winners in that period with 29 victories. Donald McCain (16 per cent), Nicky Richards (19 per cent) and Keith Dalgleish (23 per cent) all had better success ratios, though.
