Gowran Park Races

Gowran Park Racecourse is a right-handed undulating horse racing venue for Irish National Hunt events over jumps and on the flat in County Kilkenny. Used throughout the year, a full circuit of the track is about a mile-and-a-half.

Best known for jumps races during the winter months, there are three Grade 2 events held here. The Gowran Park Champion Chase over two-and-a-half miles in October, and the John Mulhern Galmoy Hurdle over three miles in January and Red Mills Chase over two-and-a-half miles in February.

The extended three-mile Thyestes Chase, meanwhile, is one of only a few Grade A handicaps held in Ireland. Gowran Park races favour horses who run prominently and up with the pace.

Gowran Park Races Tips

For the jumps action at Gowran Park Racecourse, backing trainer Willie Mullins and stable jockey Paul Townend usually pays off. The pair were top handler and active rider in the five seasons between 2015-16 and 2019-20.
Willie Mullins saddled 33 per cent of his horses to victory in that time, while Paul Townend had a 29 per cent win ratio with his mounts.
The most successful combination in Gowran Park races on the flat, meanwhile, is Ger Lyons and Colin Keane. As the Lyons stable boasted a 24 per cent strike rate with its runners between 2015 and 2019, and jockey Keane partnered 19 per cent of his horses to victory, it pays to follow that pair.
