Ffos Las Racecourse

Ffos Las Racecourse is a left-handed, oval-shaped British horse racing venue in Wales. As the home of the Welsh Champion Hurdle, now run as a limited handicap, this track has a historic National Hunt event run at it. During the summer months, there are also Ffos Las races on the flat.

As the course is level and about a mile-and-a-half for a full lap, there is an emphasis on speed. During the winter months, however, deep ground in West Wales means horses also need stamina to succeed as any Ffos Las race card will demonstrate.

October’s Welsh Champion Hurdle is about two miles in distance, while the feature race over fences is another handicap, the West Wales National, and is over three-and-a-half miles.

Ffos Las Races Tips

There are a couple of jumps jockeys who rode more than 30 winners at Ffos Las Racecourse in the five National Hunt seasons from 2015-16 to 2019-20. Sean Bowen was the best with 33 and a 20 per cent strike rate, closely followed by Adam Wedge with 31 and 19 per cent success.
Gavin Sheehan had the best average in the saddle from regular jockeys with a 28 per cent win ratio.
Evan Williams and Peter Bowen were the trainers to follow. Both saddled 30 or more winners of Ffos Las races at 15 per cent strike rates. Rebecca Curtis posted a better runner to wins ratio of 21 per cent here, however.
Oisin Murphy was the best flat jockey at Ffos Las in the five years from 2016 to 2020, meanwhile, with nine winners and 30 per cent success ratio.
Andrew Balding was top trainer, but Roger Charlton and Archie Watson had higher averages.

The ground can be extremely soft at Ffos Las Racecourse. Winners can come from anywhere as it’s a simple track, with just the top bend and home bend, but that means breathers can be difficult to find if the ground is testing. It’s probably a bit more testing than most. You need stamina but the jumping itself is straightforward.
