Epsom Racecourse

Epsom Racecourse is one of the most famous tracks in the world, let alone Britain. Its history dates back centuries and some of the most legendary moments in flat racing happened here.

Set on the Downs, just south of London, the course is an eccentric twisting, rising and falling left-handed horseshoe shape.

Over the years, millions have flocked to Epsom Downs Racecourse for the Oaks, the Coronation Cup and the most famous British flat race of all, the Derby.

Great horses such as Sea The Stars, Galileo, Nijinsky, Sea Bird II and so many more adorn the long roll of honour having won the Derby, with another name added every June.

Epsom Downs Racecourse is such a quirky track that course form is hugely important.. Horses are rarely running on a level surface, so a balanced, athletic type is more suited to the track.
The five-furlong course is downhill all the way, with one of the fastest straights in the world, so look for horses with plenty of early dash.
Irish training legend Aidan O’Brien has dominated the Derby in recent years, but Mark Johnston handles plenty of winners and Mick Channon and Roger Varian have respectable strike-rates.
In the saddle, Silvestre de Sousa has all the answers to Epsom Racecourse’s peculiar demands, while Charles Bishop and Cieren Fallon also ride the course particularly well.
