Clonmel Races

Clonmel Racecourse is a right-handed undulating track that is a rough oblong shape, located outside the town of Clonmel in County Tipperary.

The stiff uphill finish to this Irish horse racing venue means longer distance Clonmel races can be testing on softer surfaces.

A circuit of the course is about a mile-and-a-quarter, so horses complete two laps of the track for the feature Clonmel Oil Chase in November. There is also a Grade 3 novice hurdle over three miles here in February which has produced horses that have gone on to steeplechase success.

Best known for National Hunt events like these over jumps, there are also some flat meetings held at Clonmel during the summer months.

Clonmel Races Tips

At Clonmel Racecourse over jumps, it pays to follow jockey Davy Russell. While fellow Irish National Hunt rider Paul Townend has a marginally better strike rate of 27 per cent over the five seasons between 2015-16 and 2019-20, there has been greater profit in backing horses ridden by Russell. Both men steered 19 winners of Clonmel races in that time.
In terms of trainers, Willie Mullins has a phenomenal record at Clonmel in the same period. He has saddled 42 winners with a 45 per cent success ratio.
On the flat, meanwhile, watch out for jockey Billy Lee teaming up with Willie McCreery’s stable. That rider has won on 31 per cent of his mounts between 2014 and 2019, while 50 per cent of the trainer’s horses obliged in that period.
