Ballinrobe Races

Ballinrobe Racecourse is the only major horse racing venue in County Mayo, Ireland. It’s a right-handed sharp track that hosts both flat and National Hunt events over jumps from April to October.

A circuit of the course is about a mile-and-a-half, with front-running types and horses who like to be prominent doing well in Ballinrobe races most of the time.

There are currently no Black Type or Group events held at this track, but there is a Grade B handicap chase, the Mayo National, over almost three miles in May or September. This reflects its relatively low profile compared to other courses. Point to Point races take place at Ballinrobe Racecourse during the winter months, but these are different to those under Rules (regulated by the British Horse Racing Authority).

Ballinrobe Races Tips

Over jumps, a familiar combination have done best of active trainers and jockeys at Ballinrobe Racecourse down the years. Willie Mullins had a 33 per cent strike with his runners at this venue in the five seasons between 2015-16 and 2019-20.
His stable jockey Paul Townend and son Patrick Mullins, an amateur rider, both boast impressive win ratios in Ballinrobe races. Townend won with 23 per cent of his rides, but Mullins junior was almost on 50 per cent success.
On the flat, meanwhile, runners for powerful stables like that of Aidan O’Brien at Ballinrobe Racecourse are rare. In the five seasons from 2015-16 to 2019-20, he had just five runners, yet won three. Of trainers that have horses running more regularly, Jessica Harrington and Aldo McGuinness both had a 29 per cent strike rate in that time.
Shane Foley was the top active flat jockey on 22 per cent.
