Sandown Park Racecourse, to the south-west of London, is one of the country’s leading dual-purpose tracks, with excellent flat racing all summer and jump racing throughout the winter.
Sandown races boast excellent facilities and superb viewing of every part of its one mile and five furlongs circuit. The line of seven fences in the back straight, particularly the rapid-fire triple challenge of the Railway Fences, makes for a spectacular sight in a top-class steeplechase.
One such race, the Tingle Creek Chase, attracts the very best two-mile chasers each December, while for stayers the Bet365 Gold Cup, previously known as the Whitbread, brings the jump racing season to a climax in April.
Sandown races hosts some fine evening meetings in the summer, but its highlight is the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse Stakes, staged over one mile and two furlongs each July.
Five-furlong races are run over a separate track down the centre of the course, with a winning post some distance from the stands.

Sandown Racecourse is renowned for its railway fences which come to you quickest down the back straight. On a good horse, one that can really operate over obstacles, it’s such good fun to race! If you’ve got a horse that’s not quite enjoying their jumping, it can be a hold your breath experience. If you meet the first one short it’s actually a good thing, the next two come up sharp and quickly and you can find yourself getting into the bottom of them. This isn't a track for heroics, just get in and make it with an even stride.
There's an extremely long pull from the pond fence to the finish – it’s stamina sapping and you need a strong horse. The level of horse ability there is very high, so the galloping is faster and harder. The last two hurdles or fences take a lot and when you reach the pinnacle of the hill you climb all the way down the back. The hurdle track crosses the chase track down the back but you wouldn’t know it – H and C markers make it as easy to follow as possible. From above or on a map it looks a bit complicated, but it rides simple.
